Applications have fluctuated in any case over recent years, and the 5 per cent drop in 2012 was not out of the ordinary. With only 523 students beginning degrees in 2011 and only a little more than five applications to the place, the subject remains vulnerable in some universities. Entry standards remain comparatively high: no university averages less than 270 points and more than half have an average in excess of 400 points. Cambridge has retaken top place in the table, having lost it to Oxford last year. Unusually, neither of the ancient universities is in the top six for research, but Cambridge has the highest entry standards and the most satisfied students. Oxford has the top employment record and, in the absence of a score for Cambridge, was the only university to see more than three quarters of graduates find graduate-level work or a place on a postgraduate course six months after completing a degree. Queen Mary, University of London, in sixth place, and Cardiff, just outside the top ten, tie for the best score from a surprisingly low set of grades in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. Edinburgh is well ahead of Aberdeen in Scotland, while Cardiff has a similar lead over Bangor in Wales. Portsmouth is the highest-placed post-1992 university and the only one in the top ten of a ranking that is dominated by the older foundations. Hertfordshire and the West of England are the only other post-1992 universities in the top 20. Linguistics is in bottom ten subjects for starting salaries in graduate jobs, averaging less than ￡18,000.
